Cleaning Your Cat’s Litter Box
It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to regularly clean your cat’s litter box. Cats are very clean creatures with an acute sense of smell. Something that may look and smell alright to you may be simply odorous and unpleasant for a cat. A cat is unlikely to drink from a cat bowl that has a small bit of it’s own food floating in it, so it is certainly not going to use a litter box that is dirty through repeated use.
A household must have one litter box per cat, and one “spare” placed around the house. If there are limited places for litter boxes around your home, try a “litter station” where more than one are placed next to each another. This makes cleaning a little easier too.
When it comes to cleaning the box always use a pair of rubber gloves. Shake the tray gentle to help the “used” litter balls come to the surface making them easier to shake into bag. Once all of the soiled litter has been place in the bag, tie it up tight and discard in the dustbin. Replenish the box with new litter to the correct depth.
If you are giving the tray a very deep clean, remove all the litter and scrub the box down using hot soapy water. You can use old rags or something similar for this purpose which you can then wash afterwards with a little bleach for further use in the future. Make sure the box is rinsed thoroughly and then dry it with another rag. Refill the tray with fresh litter and place back in the same spot.
Lining the tray with a plastic sheet or bag, even newspaper can make the cleaning process easier, but sometimes the cat won’t like this and it may put them off using the litter box altogether. See what works best for your cat. Make sure the litter tray is emptied of soiled litter every day and replenished with clean supplies, and give it a deep clean with soap and water every week so the smell is minimized and your cat can enjoy a clean, fresh tray.
