Traveling by Car With Your Cat

Many cats do not enjoy traveling by car and often demonstrate their displeasure through sickness or with aggressive behavior. The good news is that there are measures you can take to ensure your cat is safe and happy when he or she does have to travel.

A cat should never be allowed to freely wander around a car – they will more than likely end up under the pedals. A carrier should always be used even on short trips to ensure both the passengers and cat stay safe. Make sure the carrier is sturdy and line it with their regular blanket (or any blanket) for maximum comfort. Throwing in the cat’s favorite toy is not such a bad idea either.

It is sensible to have a few practice runs with your cat in the car so they can get used to the motion. They will be less frightened if the whole experience is familiar to them. Cats often object to being in a carrier, so it is important that the cat is placed in the carrier for these trial runs too. Take short trips in the car, giving plenty of attention and treats to reward good behavior.

Cats are creatures of habit and they enjoy routine and continuity. Because of this, take their everyday belongings along for the ride including their regular food and water bowls, toys and bedding (if possible). Don’t forget their litter pan complete with actual litter and scooper. It is also a good idea to take along a harness and leash because that way, your cat can enjoy rest stops too without the danger of running off.

If you are venturing on a very long trip, ensure your cat is equipped with identification. Microchipping or even just security tags attached to the collar are both good options. Check with the vet that all vaccinations are up to date, as border crossings will often require proof of this. Always carry their medical information with you at all times in fact.

If your cat really doesn’t travel well and continues to get very sick despite rehearsals and practice runs, it might be time to call on your vet to see if there are some travel sickness pills available. Your vet can provide information on the options available.

Not all cats find traveling by car an unpleasant experience, and many take to it like a duck to water. Don’t wait until you have to take the cat somewhere by car to test this out.
