Adopting a Cat from an Animal Shelter
Offering a warm and loving home to a cat living in a shelter is a wonderfully rewarding experience. Cats are lovable and intelligent creatures, able to offer companionship and fun to all the family for many years to come, but there are a few things that must be taken into consideration before beginning the process of cat adoption.
Before adopting a cat it is important to understand it is a lifelong commitment. Although they are independent animals that dance to their own tune, they need a certain level of care and attention which if not met, will lead to them having a poor quality of life. It is important to be aware of the financial obligations having a cat involves. Health care, vaccinations, scratching posts, food – if money is already tight, you may need to reconsider taking on a cat.
There are further considerations too. For example are your kids are old enough to properly look after a cat and understand how they should care for it correctly? Will there be an adult to take ultimate responsibility and ensure regular jobs such as feeding, grooming and keeping the litter tray clean are carried out? It is by no means laborious keeping a cat, but there is some degree of effort required to ensure your pet stays happy and healthy.
Once the decision has been made, it is a good idea spending some time thinking about whether to choose an adult cat or a kitten. Certainly kittens are cute, but can you handle a creature that is not yet litter trained, neutered or vaccinated running around you home causing chaos and disorder.? If you are getting a cat for a specific purpose (such as catching mice), the age of the cat is very important as a senior cat or young kitten will not be very capable in this role. Consider this part carefully, as there is no going back once you have brought your new friend home.
There is no doubt that choosing to adopt a cat or kitten from a shelter is a positive experience. Cats enjoy human company and the warmth of family life and would always be grateful to be welcomed into a home. As long as careful thought has been given beforehand, there is no reason to wait a minute longer.
